Chapter 1 - School Starts Again

Today was the big day. Everyone would be going their own way. Brianna had gotten up extra early to make a big breakfast for Scott and Cathy.

She wanted the feeling of summer to continue. She had been cheated out of most of it because she had needed that terrible operation. Her sickness also cheated Scott out of a carefree summer.

She looked down at her hand. The diamond on her left hand reflected the light hanging over the dining room table, sparkling in every direction. She and Scott had only been engaged for a couple of days, but she already had such a good feeling about their marriage. He had held her hand throughout the long recovery. That said more than a thousand roses could.

Finding someone who loved her despite her medical problem was like winning the lottery. The chances had been so slight, but there he was. She could hear him in the shower. It was hard not to picture him naked in there. He had, basically, already seen her naked, here a half and then the other half, but he hadn’t seen her completely naked all at once. She still worried about the scars. Would they bother him ten years down the road?

She was curious what he might look like. Should I ask him if I could see him naked? Would he agree to something like that? Or would he think badly about me?

She bit her lip for a moment while she imagined joining him in the shower.

“Wow, Brianna. This is great. The perfect jump start for a new school year.” Cathy came out of her room and looked over the table. Cathy was Brianna’s best friend and Scott’s youngest sister. She was a friendly attractive girl who had a positive outlook on life.

The three of them all lived together in an apartment in Birmingham where they were apartment sitting for friends of their parents. All three came from the same hometown, but Brianna and Scott hadn’t realized that until Christmas two years back.

They met at college. Brianna had been in her freshmen year, and Scott had been the floor monitor whose job it had been to see to it that all the girls on the floor worked to the fullest of their abilities.

The college was one that catered especially to lazy girls with high aptitudes. They had very convincing rules that made each girl work to their capacity.

Cathy had moved to school later that school year to get away from her ex-boyfriend. That hadn’t quite worked because he found her. Scott had managed to save his sister from him and help put him in jail.

Cathy had only gotten a place at that school because of her connections to Scott, and of course, because a room had freed up when Jennifer, a Neo-Nazi, had to be removed from the floor. Jennifer went to live with the Dean. On the evening that Brianna had to be taken to the hospital, she ran away from him and went back to her boyfriend Ben.

That was also the evening that Scott learned the truth about Brianna. He thought that she had skipped school back in High School, and that was the reason that she had been at his school. He hadn’t known that she had been born with a bad heart. She had honestly been sick on all of those days.

When Scott found her unconscious, lying on the floor in her room, he revived her, saving her life. At that time, he had already been in love with her. He waited for her to finish school before he confessed his feelings to her.

At first, she had been shocked, but after a few dates, she got to know the real man and she also fell in love with him. The moment he had proposed to her had been the most magical in all of her life.

Scott came in and kissed Brianna’s cheek. “Thanks for breakfast, darling.” He wished that he could kiss her longer, but they all had to leave soon. He helped her sit down before he sat down next to her.

“Morning? I’m here too.” Cathy gave him a mean look.

“Oh Cathy, I didn’t see you,” he teased her.

Cathy rolled her eyes. She hated being a third wagon wheel. This happened all the time. She was pretty much just here to chaperone them, but they ignored her and kissed constantly.

Cathy scolded herself. She was happy for both of them. They were both great people, and they deserved to love and be loved.

She was just a little jealous.

They ate their food and talked about being nervous as well as being excited to start at new schools. Cathy was going to be a nurse. Scott wanted to become a lawyer, and Brianna was studying music. Each went to a different school, but they promised to meet up and compare their experiences this afternoon over another nice meal.

Brianna looked around at the other students in her class. Most of them looked bored. Only a few were even talking about music. This was a required class. It taught the history of music, and she had a similar class back in Texas. An easy A, she figured.

The door opened, and a young man came in. He was looking at his iPod and not watching where he was going.

Brianna saw that he had a leather case with him while everyone else had normal backpacks. She quickly sat down, guessing that he was the teacher.

The man made his way up to the front of the class and set the case down on the desk with a thump, like he didn’t care about it. Then he turned to the locked up music system and pulled out the keys. Now, everyone was sitting down watching him place his iPod in the machine. The room filled with the music of Haydn.

The teacher said nothing, and everyone simply listened.

Scott entered his first class and also looked around for a place to sit down. The others appeared to be so young. Some people were even looking at him like they thought that he was the teacher. He sat towards the front in case the teacher was soft spoken.

Scott needed to do well. He had a successful lawyer father-in-law to impress, and he wanted to provide Brianna with the type of home that she was used to. He also needed really good health care.

Worries about an insurance company turning down an operation that Brianna might need to stay alive were going through his head while a young woman sat down next to him.

“Hi, I’m Jodi. The back of the room filled up pretty quickly, didn’t it?”

Scott looked at the smiling blond woman next to him for a moment before he looked over his shoulder. “Sure did. I figured I would sit up front in case the teacher’s voice doesn’t carry well.” r />
“Good, because I was worried that he might be a spitter. And me without my raincoat.”

Scott had to smile at her. She was just so lively, and he even had to admit, pretty. She was tanned and probably the outdoorsy type.

However, Scott preferred dark haired, pale beauties, like his Brianna. He hoped that the guys were leaving her alone. Maybe he should have gotten her a ring with blinking lights.

He looked to the front of the classroom. The teacher was coming in. Everything settled down.

After class, Jodi smiled at Scott and asked him about his other classes. They had the next one together too.

She seemed nice enough, but he felt stupid walking around campus with her when he had a girlfriend. She was easy to talk to, and they weren’t doing anything other than walking together. They passed a bulletin board, and Jodi stopped to look at the options for informal sports groups.

Scott also looked. He and Brianna had just talked about that on the evening that he proposed to her.

“Look Scott, they have a group that meets Saturday mornings where they do all kinds of different things.” She pulled out her cell and took a picture of the flyer. “That’s perfect because it is something that my boyfriend and I could do together.”

Scott sighed relieved. “Would it bug you if I showed up too?”

“No, anyone can join. Are you going to bring your girlfriend along?”

“No, Brianna has a heart condition. She can’t do sports. She is a gifted pianist.” He just wanted to do something where he at least knew someone.

“I’m so sorry to hear that.” The look of pity on her face was real.

Scott nodded at her before they moved on to their next class. She had acted like Brianna was living on a death sentence.

  Was Jodi, right?

The teacher smiled at the class. He had a nice warm smile, Brianna thought. She could see that he loved teaching this class as well as this subject. “Okay class; tell me how you liked it.” He called on several people and, slowly, a conversation started.

He stood in front of Brianna’s desk and looked down at her. “I saw you smiling while I played the piece. Tell us what you thought of it.”

“Haydn is one of my favorites.”

“Whoa, class we have someone here who knows what she is talking about.” He praised Brianna and made her feel interesting and smart.

Brianna had a wonderful morning in all of her classes. Her last class was piano lessons. She was surprised to see Mr. Lorenz again.

  “Brianna, right?”

  “Yes, sir.”

“Your normal teacher is expecting a baby. The doctor told her that she has to lie down for the rest of her pregnancy, so I am filling in for the rest of the semester. Is that all right with you?”

  “Sure, I guess so.”

“Okay, tell me what level you are at?” He sat down at the piano and patted the seat next to him.

  “Level?”

“Can you play a little, or are you just starting today? I perform a mean Chopsticks.”

Brianna had to grin. “I’ll just show you what I am working on at the moment.” She got her music sheets out of her bag and spread them out in front of them. She lifted her hands and played.

“So basically you should be teaching me,” he teased her when she finished.

  Brianna’s face dropped.

“I’m just kidding. You came to the right school. I noticed you were a little off on your timing here and here.” He pointed to the right places.

“I know, but it’s like it’s in my head wrong.”

  “Don’t worry. Try again.”

It had been so long since Brianna had been at a real lesson where a teacher could teach her something. She really enjoyed it.

Brianna went home and made lunch for Scott and Cathy. They had loads of reading homework to do. Each of them told the others about their day.

Brianna beamed as she told them that she had gotten a real lesson today. She left out the fact that her teacher was so young, and that he was a man.

Scott told them that he wanted to go to a sports group on Saturdays with some of the other students that he met today. He didn’t say that one was a very attractive woman.

“Sure, we talked about that,” Brianna reminded him. “I think it is a good idea. And it’s a great chance for you to get to know the others. With lawyers it’s all about contacts.”

Scott was relieved that she was not only giving him permission but also encouraging him to go. It made him feel somehow less guilty about everything even though he hadn’t done anything wrong.

Cathy complained about how tough her classes were and how so many didn’t make it.

Brianna told her that she would help where she could. “It only makes sense. I have the easiest schedule. I can do the cooking and the cleaning.”

“Brianna,” Scott closed his eyes. He was picturing her laying in bed, shaking, as she had done after her last operation. “You are still recovering. I won’t let you overwork yourself.”

“But I have the most time on my hands. It isn’t too much. Besides, this way I can make sure that I am eating the right foods for my diet.”

“This isn’t up for discussion. I mean it.” He gave her a strict look, telling her she better knock it off quickly.

Cathy was a little disappointed. Brianna was feeling so much better already, and she was the best cook of the three of them. Cathy was worried about failing and felt that she needed every bit of help that she could get. She even reasoned with herself that if she had more time to study, she could better help Brianna if she needed it, medically.

Scott was really worried about Brianna’s health. He completely forgot about Jodi when he looked at his Brianna.

He looked at her hand and smiled. The ring was there; everyone could see it. He knew that he was engaged to a beautiful woman.

Any man would want to snatch her away from him.

Scott was the last to go to bed. He couldn’t help it, but he had to check on Brianna before he went to his own room. It was a habit that was already so in place. Before they had come here, he had called over to her house every evening to say good night.

He knocked ever so lightly on her door before he quietly pushed the door open and peeked in.

She was asleep and dreaming. She looked happy. He quietly leaned in and kissed her on her lips.

Brianna moved ever so slightly, making a noise like she was eating her favorite dish.

Scott grinned and turned to leave. He heard soft talking on the other side of the door.

Who was Cathy talking to at this late hour?

He rolled his eyes to himself and went over to her room. Again, he knocked softly and again he received no answer. He went into her room.

This was just like last year. The only difference was that he wasn’t getting paid.

He found his sister walking up and down as she read a book aloud. It was one of her text books. She looked like she had been crying.

  “Hey, what are you doing?”

Cathy stopped walking and shook her head.

“What’s wrong?” He gently took hold of her arm and guided her to her bed where they both sat down.

Cathy turned to him, burying her face in his shoulder. It took a moment before she could talk. “Over half the undergraduates don’t make it. I’m not all that smart. Chances are I’m going to be one those who doesn’t make it.”

  “Says who?”

Cathy felt like she might just burst out in tears. She had no idea how much studying went into becoming a nurse. She had a heavy load ahead of her.

Cathy talked to the others at her school. Some were working mothers, still others had to work full-time while they went to school. She was actually really lucky.

Still, hearing that over 60% either dropped out or failed out scared her. That was more than half. Would she make it?

“They said it at school. Only the best will pass. I’m not the best. I’m just me.” She peeked up at his face.

>   “Hey,” he smiled. “I’d bet my last shirt that you will be in the fifty percent that makes it. I know that you can do it. You had the exceptional privilege to go to my school, and I taught you how to press your nose to the grindstone and really study. The fact that you are worried tells me that you are taking this seriously. You will do just fine.”

“Do you really think so, Scott?”

“I know so. Now get some sleep. Tomorrow I want you to start fresh and with a confident smile on your face because you will make it.” He squeezed her tightly. “And if you start to slip up, we will go back to school rules.” He stood and walked to the door, thinking that she was very cute.

“Welcome to the first floor meeting here on the third floor of Polk hall. Each of you received a student’s handbook. Let’s play a game – ”

Jessica drowned out the new guy’s words. The new disciplinarian wasn’t young like Scott or all that attractive. He was older, but not as old as her father. He did look strong enough to do the job.

Her eyes roamed over his body sizing him up. They moved down his pant leg and stopped at his shoes, which were sturdy and clean.

What did it matter to her what he looked like? She would only really have to see his left leg and shoes when she was over his lap half naked.

He would do until she could find something better. Jessica needed someone who understood her, someone who would always be there for her, and just for her.

She had tried to talk to her parents, but they hadn’t understood or cared.

“Six,” she whispered a little too loud.

The new school disciplinarian turned to look at her. His eyebrow was scrunched together. “What’s your name?”

“Jessica,” she answered in a meek voice, pretending to be surprised to be caught giving the first year girl the answers.
